Recent natural disasters across the nation have heightened public awareness of the need to minimise the destruction and human tradegy such disaster events. Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) has responded to this increased focus on disaster management with the recent appointment of a Disaster Management Coordinator and the running of a mock disaster management exercise. Council has a Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) that functions under the requirements of the Disaster Management Act 2003. The group includes council personnel and representatives from emergency service agencies such as Police, Fire, Ambulance, Emergency Management QLD, SES, Ergon Energy, Lifeline, Telstra and Qld Health. The LDMG is supported by a Disaster Coordination Centre which would conduct the day-to-day operations of any major disaster event that arose within the TRC area. This centre would be staffed by council officers if activated.

This TRC disaster website has been established where the public can view news items relating to disaster events, State and council plans, how to prepare for specific events, education and SES matters. The website also contains direct links to other emergency agencies and to weather websites.
